With the rapid development of electronic technology, image sensing technology and computer technology, the use of automatic optical (visual) detection technology for surface defects based on optical image sensing instead of manual visual inspection of surface defects has gradually become an important means of surface defect detection. Because this method has the advantages of automation, non-contact, fast speed, high precision, and high stability.

 

Automatic optical inspection (AOI) technology, also known as machine vision inspection (MVI) technology. It is a high-speed, high-precision optical image inspection system that uses machine vision as the standard technology for inspection. It is an effective inspection method for industrial automation. It uses optical methods to obtain the surface condition of the finished product, and uses image processing to detect defects such as foreign objects or abnormal patterns.

In SMT inspection, the AOI inspection equipment will automatically scan the PCB through the camera, collect images, and compare the inspected solder joints with the qualified parameters in the database. After the image is processed, the defects on the PCB are checked out, and the defects are displayed/marked by the display or automatic signs for repair by maintenance personnel.

 

The earliest method used for PCB inspection is manual visual inspection. Due to the requirements of high-density circuit wiring and high output, manual visual inspection cannot meet the reliability requirements. The best solution for repetitive, monotonous and strict inspection tasks is to use an automatic optical inspection system, which can meet the comprehensive inspection of PCBs on the production line.

 

The AOI system can detect the following errors: missing components, wrong polarity of tantalum capacitors, incorrect position or deflection of solder pins, bent or folded solder pins, excessive or insufficient solder, solder bridges or false soldering. AOI can not only inspect defects that cannot be detected by manual visual inspection, but also detect components and solder joints that cannot be touched by the needle bed in online inspection, thereby improving defect coverage. AOI can also collect the work quality of each process in the production process and the types of defects that occur, and feed it back to the process control personnel for analysis and management to reduce the scrap rate of PCBs.

 

Where AOI inspection equipment is used: AOI can be used in multiple positions on the production line, and each position can detect special defects, but AOI inspection equipment should be placed in a position that can identify and correct most defects as soon as possible. AOI detection is usually available after the PCB board etching process, which is mainly used to find the missing and redundant parts in the X-ray detector.
